Domkantorei St. Martin Mainz
The Domkantorei St. Martin was founded in January 1987 as a mixed choir.
The 90 members, youths and adults, sing in the Cathedral services on Sundays once a month and on holidays. Great works of sacred music are performed in the "Mainzer Domkonzerte".
During the twenty years of its existence, the Domkantorei St. Martin was able to perform oratorios and masses by J.S.Bach and various well-known composers up to the present time.
The world premiere of the "Missa Moguntina" by Volker David Kirchner, broadcasted by TV and radio programmes, and the performance of Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" in the memory of the air raids on the city of Mainz were highlights. So was the premiere of "Bonifatius", an oratorio by Thomas Gabriel, in 2oo4.
The a cappella repertory includes masses and motets of the 16th to the 20th century.
The Domkantorei St. Martin toured Berlin, Paris, London, Rome, Warsaw, Krakow, Vienna, Prague , Jerusalem, Haifa and other European cities, performing together with Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz, SWR-Rundfunkorchester Kaiserslautern, Beethoven-Orchester Bonn, Philharmonisches Orchester des Staatstheaters Mainz and Mainzer Kammerorchester.
At the Staatstheater Mainz, the Domkantorei was not only invited to concerts, but also to stage productions of "Saul" by G.F. Haendel and "Elias" by Mendelssohn-Bartholdy under the direction of Catherine Rueckwardt, the chief musical director.
The Domkantorei meets regularly once a week for an intense rehearsal. Every year there are also two choir weekends where the great works are rehearsed and where there is also time for social gatherings.
The Domkantorei was founded by its conductor Prof. Mathias Breitschaft.
